Over-the-Top (OTT)

Over-the-Top (OTT) refers to content and services provided over the internet that bypass traditional media distribution channels such as broadcasters, cable, and satellite television providers.

OTT services can be accessed directly by consumers through any internet-connected device, including smartphones, tablets, computers, and smart TVs.

  • Streaming Services: One of the most common forms of OTT content is streaming services for movies, TV shows, and music. Popular examples include Netflix, Hulu, Amazon Prime Video, Spotify, and Apple Music.

  • No Traditional TV Subscription Required: Unlike conventional cable or satellite services, OTT services do not require users to subscribe to traditional television service. Users typically pay for OTT services directly on a subscription or pay-per-view basis.

  • Delivery Over the Internet: OTT content is delivered over the internet, bypassing traditional distribution and broadcasting networks. This allows for greater accessibility and often more personalized content.

  • Impact on Traditional Media: The rise of OTT services has significantly impacted traditional media and entertainment industries, prompting shifts in how content is produced, distributed, and monetized.

  • Global Reach: OTT platforms can reach a global audience, breaking geographical barriers that traditional broadcasting services often face.

OTT represents a significant shift in media consumption, characterized by direct-to-consumer distribution and the growing preference for internet-based streaming and communication services over traditional broadcasting and communication mediums.
